Requirements:

  • An active network card
  • A reliable network

In order to have good results: devices must been started, not stopping. If not, scanning of these devices could be affected.

  • (Optional) A name server properly configured, otherwise informations printed in the interface could be wrong.
  • (Optional) An internet connexion to update the signatures file and to get last update of the product.

Firewall issues:

Active firewalll on the local machine could block entirely or parlty the network discovering.

Wifi card issues on Windows:

Some Wifi card drivers without all functionnalities of a classic driver could block the network discovering.

Symptom is an empty equipment list.

List of supported cards:

Description:

AutoScan-Network is a network discovering and managing application. No configuration is required to scan your network. The main goal is to print the list of connected equipments in your network.

Features:

Multithreaded Scan
Automatic network discovery
Low surcharge on the network
Deployment of agents on the network

Simultaneous subnetworks scans without human intervention
Realtime detection of any connected equipment
Supervision of any equipment (router, server, firewall...)
Supervision of any network service (smtp, http, pop, ...)
Automatic detection of known operatic system (brand and version), you can also add any unknown equipment to the database
Complete network tree can be saved in a XML file.
Intruders detection (in intruders detection mode, all new equipments blacklisted)
File sharing exploration (Hidden shares compatibility)
Telnet Client
Nessus Client
Wake on lan functionality
Privileged account is not required

Installation:

To install AutoScan-Network, go on this link http://autoscan-network.com/ and download the latest version for your operating system.

On Windows systems:
Double-click on the package AutoScanNetwork-1.xx-windows-installer.exe, you've just downloaded.
Follow the instructions, some of features could not been enabled at this time (like file sharing support)

On Pre-packaging systems:
Just refer to the manual of your distribution

On others Linux systems:
Once you've downloaded the package, decompress the 'tar.gz' file and double-click on the binary file "AutoScan-Network-Linux-1.1x.bin" The installation starts...
(If you get troubles during the installation, start a shell with root access privileges and re-execute the binary file)
This is the simplest way to install AutoScan-Network but some features are not included (like file sharing support)
To deinstall AutoScan-Network start a shell with root access privileges, and type '/opt/AutoScan/uninstall'

On Nokia N770, N800 or N810 systems:
Double-click on the package, follow the instructions and reboot your device.

Startup:

On Windows systems, click on the "Start menu", then "All programs", "AutoScan Network" and "AutoScan Network" or just click the desktop shortcut.
On Linux Gnome-interface systems, click on the "Application" menu, then "Internet", "AutoScan Network" and AutoScan-Network icon. On Linux KDE-interface systems, click on the "K" menu, then "Internet", "AutoScan Network" and AutoScan-Network icon. On Nokia N770-N800-N810 devices, click on the "Supplements" menu, then "AutoScan Network" and AutoScan-Network icon.
In others case binary file to launch is :
C:\AutoScan\bin\autoscan-network.exe on Microsoft systems \usr\bin\autoscan-network or /opt/AutoScan/bin/autoscan-network on Linux systems

At the first execution of AutoScan, the directory .Autoscan will be created:
In the C:\AutoScan path on Windows systems
In the user home directory on Linux systems

Presentation:

The application is composed of two parts:
- A graphical interface showing results and giving you access to all functionnalities. (The binary 'autoscan-network' is located in the /usr/bin, /opt/AutoScan/bin or c:\AutoScan\bin directory.

- The agent scanning the network and supervising equipments state on the local network. It communicates its results to the graphical interface by a TCP socket.

The graphical interface can connect one or more agents (local or remote) in order to supervise any remote networks. (A agent must be deployed on each supervised-network).
The binary agent can be found in /usr/sbin, /opt/AutoScan/bin or c:\AutoScan\bin directory.

The Add Network Wizard:

On the first Wizard page, see the picture beelow, you can create a new network or restore a saved network.

Creation of a new network:
- Select the "New" radio button
- Enter the network name on the name edit field (Be sure to you have different names for all your supervised network)
- Choose a graphical icon for your network
- In the "Private subnet" field you can see private network wich will be scanned by Autoscan (Just leave the default settings)
- Choose the SNMP community name in the field beelow (or leave the default community)
- The "Dynamic IP" checkbox tells the agent to take care of dynamic IP changes (keep the box checked)

Restoration of a network
- Select the "Restore" radio button
- Enter the XML filename of your saved network

On the second page, see the picture beelow, you can choose wich network you want to scan.
- Check the "localhost" radio button if you use the local agent.
- Check the "Connect to host" radio button if you want to connect to a remote agent, in this case fills the informations fields to connect to the remote machine running the 'autoscan-network-daemon'

Page 2 de l'assistant

On the third page, you can select the network adapter.
At this stage, AutoScan communicates with the agent to send configuration informations. Next you can choose the network adapter to use for the scan.

The last page is a summary.
The final step show you summary informations (network name and network adapter). Just click the Next button to start the agent discovering process.

Warning:
if you wanna add another network, click the "Add a network" button. All your networks are displayed in a multiple tab window.

How it works:
Autoscan is permanently scanning the network, looking for new equipments. When a new device is plugged over the network, Autoscan identify the device and the model (Some compatible devices: Notepad, Desktop, Servers, Switch, Router, Video games, Phone over IP, surveillance cam, Fax...)
The device identification is based on a packet recognization, each type of device has its own signatures like a "fingerprint" stored in the AutoScan database. The database already contains more than 500 different signatures for most of systems. Unknown devices are printed in a separate Unknown list. You can add your own signatures to the database, just click on the unknown device and follow the instructions of the unknown device Wizard. You can also add icon files into the application, just copy them into the /usr/share/pixmaps/AutoScan/Equipment, /opt/AutoScan/usr/share/pixmaps/AutoScan/Equipment/ or c:\AutoScan\usr\share\pixmaps\AutoScan\Equipment directory.

The interface

During the discovery of the network, new devices are displayed in the left tab. When you click on a device, you can see informations in the two fields of the right tab. These informations are:

IP Address
MAC Address
Network adapter brand
Open ports
Free informations fields (you can put some informations in them like email, owner name, ...)

The progress bar on the right-bottom corner show the scan progression, you can see in it:

Total number of found devices
Number of currently scanned devices
Number of devices waiting for scan
Pourcent of scanned print in the interface

The network tree can be printed in two ways:

Sort by device type (routers, switchs, printers, servers) and Microsoft domain type. This is the default display mode.
Sort by ascending IP address

This feature is activate by right-clicking on the device list (in the left tab)

Configuration:

The configuration is done by clicking on the "settings" button. It's display in a tab window. Depending on your operating system some tabs are not displayed.

The "general" tab: (this tab can differs from a system to another)

Configuration

Minimize to trayicon: Minimize the application in the tray bar next to the click on the right-bottom corner of your desktop screen.
When the application is minimized it's running in the background you can restore it by clicking on then icon on the tray bar.

trayicon

Start minimized: the application starts minimized in the tray bar.
SMTP: this is the default address of the SMTP server. The SMTP server is used to send mail to the man in charge when an alert rise (see the alert notification section)
Audio device: Choose the audio device used to play alert sounds (see the alert notification section)
